1. The Storm Cell That Would Not Move

A county emergency dispatcher notices one storm cell has been parked over the same holler for nine hours. Every call from inside begins normal and ends with the caller whispering someone else’s childhood memories.

2. The Company Town That Paid Its Dead

A mining company still issues payroll checks to workers who died in 1978. Their descendants cash them because poverty is poverty. Then the dead start clocking in again.

3. Waffle House Saint

A waitress working the graveyard shift knows which customers are human, which are dead, and which are something worse. She keeps the peace with coffee, cigarettes, and three rules written under the counter in nail polish.

4. The Green Would Not Let Them Take Her

A child marked by a Hungry Near-Below thing runs into the woods. The woods close ranks. Years later, she returns as an adult because the thing has started taking children from town again.

5. Claims Adjustment

An insurance adjuster investigates a flood claim in a town that was never officially flooded. The houses are full of river mud, dead fish, and family photographs of people who were never born.

6. The Choir in the Drainage Ditch

Teenagers recording a metal demo near a drainage ditch accidentally capture a chorus underneath the track. Everyone who listens becomes convinced the song is about them personally.

7. The Pastor’s Other Sermon

A small-town preacher gives ordinary sermons on Sunday morning and a second sermon alone in the empty sanctuary after midnight, addressed to the thing beneath the church that keeps the town safe.

8. Natural Continuity

A junior analyst at the Department of Natural Continuity realizes her supervisor has no reflection, no personnel file before 1963, and a suspiciously accurate model for predicting child disappearances.

9. The Funeral Director’s Ledger

A funeral director keeps two ledgers: one for the living and one for the dead who are not finished. When the second ledger is stolen, the town’s oldest grudges begin walking.

10. The House That Would Not Sell

A real estate agent keeps failing to sell a beautiful farmhouse because every buyer dreams of a woman under the floorboards begging them not to move in. The agent eventually realizes the woman is not warning the buyers away from the house. She is warning the house away from them.

11. Roadside Crosses

A state road accumulates more memorial crosses than it has recorded accidents. A mother looking for her missing son discovers each cross marks someone who survived something they were supposed to die in.

12. The Borrowed Mayor

A beloved small-town mayor keeps winning elections, fixing roads, funding schools, and feeding something under city hall one volunteer per year.

13. No Signal Past Mile Marker 81

A rideshare driver accepts a late-night fare to a town that does not appear on maps. The passenger pays in cash, knows the driver’s dead brother’s name, and insists they must arrive before sunrise.

14. Kudzu Gospel

An invasive wall of kudzu protects a poor neighborhood from a corporate development project. Then people start hearing hymns from inside it, sung by voices they buried years ago.

15. The Girl Who Knew the Tornado’s Name

A child survives a tornado by speaking its true name. The storm begins following her through life like a loyal, jealous dog.

16. Bad Dirt

A construction crew breaks ground on a luxury subdivision and unearths soil that bleeds. The developer orders them to keep digging.

17. The One Good Cop, Unfortunately

A sheriff’s deputy who knows the department is compromised tries to save a suspect from being transferred to a federal agency everyone calls Natural Continuity. The suspect may be a murderer, a victim, or a doorway.

18. The Bee Keeper

A retired woman keeps bees on land everyone else avoids. The bees make black honey that can hide a person from demons for one night, if they can stomach what it shows them.

19. Static on the Baby Monitor

New parents hear an old woman through the baby monitor telling their infant family secrets. At first she seems protective. Then she asks to be invited in.

20. The Immortal at the School Board Meeting

A parent recognizes one of the school board members from a photograph taken in 1912. He has been guiding local education policy for over a century to prevent children from learning certain words.
